Newspaper Structure Challenge
We use rolled up newspaper, taped into small geometric shapes. Those geometric shapes are then combined and stacked to make a sculpture as tall as the person making it. If you’ve got some spray paint lying around, go for it, but these can look just fine au natural. I generally have students
Structures Tip: Triangles and pyramids are much more structurally sound than squares, rectangles, or cubes.
Focus: Focus on a piece that is stable, looks good from all viewpoints, and accentuates the geometric aspects of the sculpture. Jae Ko's work ranges from discrete wall reliefs and small sculptures to monumental installations that evoke topography and movement. Inspired by visits to Newfoundland and the far northwestern reaches of the United States, Ko reconstructs the melting Tundra, with its floating, fractured glaciers. The room-sized monumental sculptural relief is constructed from nearly one ton of recycled paper that has been re-spooled and shaped to fit the architecture of CAMH’s Zilkha Gallery.
