Safe Practices in the Art Room- Ceramics
Clay dust is hazardous you your lungs. Overtime it can build up in your lungs and cause health issues. Therefore we must take precautions while working with clay.
1.Dry Clay: Collect in buckets with a lid. Sweep up any and all lumps of dry clay into a dustpan or bucket. Use a sponge to clean clay dust.
2. Spills: Always wipe up clay spills off the floor-Wet clay is very slippery.
3. Mixing Raw clay materials(Dry): wear a respirator and safety glasses to keep the clay out of your eyes and lungs.
4.Sanding Clay: Sanding bone dry clay should be done with a respirator and outside. Use a box lid under your work to collect the dust. dump the dust into the reclaim bucket.
5. Mixing Clay: Never mix clay alone. Wear a dust mask and safety glasses.
Other Safety Precautions
Wheel Safety: Take your lanyards off while on the wheel. Hair ties for really long hair.
Glazing: Glazes contain chemicals. Although many glazes are non toxic some are not good for you. Be mindful of your glaze. NO FOOD OR DRINKS on the work surface or in your space while glazing.
Other Tools:
Drill Press:Take off your lanyard before using.You must be trained to use the machinery properly before open use. Always wear safety glasses. Remove Key when finished and return to the teacher
Saws: Always wear your safety glasses. Be aware of your surroundings. Pull hair back if long. Be trained on the tool before using it. Sweep or Vacuum all saw dust once finished. Unplug Saw when finished.
