Process: Carving in the Round
What do I do?
MaquetteMaquette : A small model to visualize and test forms and ideas. This allows for experimentation before using more expensive resources or large scale works. Resources are needed if you are recreating a form realistically. |
Observe/SketchObserve and draw from the left. Observe and draw from the right. Observe and draw from the front. Observe and draw from the back. Observe and draw from the top. |
Sketch on foamUse the drawings and transfer them to the block. Transfer ideas to all sides of the block. |
CarvingBegin roughly carving the shape outline, it will resemble a very thick cookie. Use a fettling knife or butter knife to cut away areas Use the rasp or rifflers to curve edges and define the form. Carve details and begin smoothing. |
Sealing. Painting. Finishing
Brush on Paints Brush: Using a 1 inch flat brush gesso your finished sculpture to seal your work. You will only need one coat of Gesso. Spread the Gesso smoothly. Once dry you can use the acrylic paint to add an overall color. Allow to dry. |
Spray paints: Set up a spray booth area using a cardboard box . Follow the directions on the spray bottle. Wear your N95 Mask Air Brush: If you would like to air brush you will need to wear the N95 mask while working. You must learn how to clean up the airbrush if you use it. |
Finishing:
Using Repetition and Rhythm add line with wire, skewers, toothpicks, or other materials provided.
Apply Value:
Using tone(mixing gray into the color) or shade(mixing black into the color) apply blended paint into shadow areas of the sculpture. You can use some Media mixer to blend in the color and make the shadow translucent.
Optional: Create a wooden base. Select wood. Drill a hole for a skewer. Glue in skewer into the base. Measure and cut the skewer to 1/2 the height. Sand. Paint or Stain. Carefully skewer the foam down the center.
